Beech Fagus Sylvatica
The Queen of trees
I'm the most majestic of trees growing to the magnificent height of 35 - 40 metres. I have a huge canopy and a single straight trunk with grey bark.Â
I use the wind for pollination and have lovely nuts that ripen as my leaves turn a russet brown in the Autumn. Pig farmers feed my nuts to their stock to fatten them up.
Did you know the Whomping Willow, in Harry Potter, was based on my 400 year old brother with a bit of computer graphics and I makeMy roots really good firewood. I prefer not to be too wet so like a good draining soil.

Birch Betula Pendula
Lady of the wood
Hello I'm the lady of the woods and more commonly know as a Silver birch because of my brilliant white bark.
I grow really quickly, up to 25 metres high when mature and love then sunshine. I have diamond shaped leaves and an airy canopy that gives dappled shade turning a vibrant yellow in the Autumn.
My bark was used for canoes and boats and my resin makes quite a decent glue.

Hazel Corylus avellana
Protection from Adders, snakes and everything....
I can grow really quickly, sometimes 45 centimetres in one year! My brothers have early yellow catkins that have great pollen for the bees.
According to the brother Grimm I provide protection against adders, snakes and everything but more usually my branches are used for walking sticks and garden stakes.
In Autumn I provide pale green cobnuts held in a lacy Elizabethan ruff and in olden times the Celts believed my nuts were food for the brain.

Holly Ilex Aquifolium
Mythological charm against witches, goblins and the devil!
Watch out for my prickly leaves if you get close to me. I'm a Holly and a shrub not a trees really. I can grow to 15 metres high and can live for 300 years. I love full sun and will need feeding in the Spring and Autumn with Fish, blood and bone. My dense cover is a great shelter for birds and hedgehogs hibernate in my fallen leaves. Grow me and you'll love my scarlet berries throughout the winter.

Common Oak Quercus robur
Grandfather of the forest
You may think me common but I am the Grandfather of the forest with relatives who have lived for a thousand years.
I may be slow growing but am the single best tree for supporting wildlife. Caterpillars love my leaves, insects find a home in my gnarly bark and my acorns provide food for many animals.
I have a deep tap root so can survive long dry periods and I prefer moist clay soils.
My wood is very strong and I've been used for making ships and timber frames for buildings throughout time.

Black Poplar Populus nigra italica
Perhaps the rarest native tree in Britain
I'm a Black Poplar and one of the rarest native trees in Britain. I grow to a height of 30 metres and can live for 200 years. I'm very flexible and was historically used to make cart wheels or thatch but now am more useful for artificial limbs and wine cases. I love the sunshine and have adapted to survive hot dry summers. My flowers are a good source of nectar for bees and my leaves have a faint scent of balsam. Grow me and you'll not be disappointed as I reach tall and straight for the sky.
